Leaning Technologies today released CheerpJ 4.3, the latest version of its WebAssembly-based Java runtime for the browser. The release focuses on stability and on the experience of the people who use Java applications in the browser.
CheerpJ runs Java applications, applets and Java Web Start applications in modern browsers, with no Java installation, plugin or server-side component. It supports Java 8, 11 and 17, and is used by organisations worldwide to bring Swing, AWT and Oracle Forms applications to the web.
What CheerpJ 4.3 adds
- File upload from an icon in the title bar of every Java window
- File download to the user’s machine, for any file an application saves to a dedicated downloads directory
- Long-press as hover on touch screens, so Swing menus and other hover-driven components work on phones and tablets
- Improved pointer and touch handling
- Stability and performance improvements for the Java 11 and 17 runtimes
The full announcement is on the CheerpJ blog, and the technical release notes are on Leaning Technologies’ technical blog.
